Task
The project was initially written by game designers on ready-made assets without taking into account the best development practices and performance considerations and with a large number of inherited errors.
Initially, on PlayStation 4, the game showed an average of 15 fps, dropping to 4 fps in particularly critical places.
Results
From an artistic standpoint, many assets have been reworked to improve performance and raise fps. And from an engineering standpoint, our team has significantly reworked the codebase, getting rid of duplication and fixing over 100 legacy bugs.
The most significant changes affected:
- Optimization of the volumetric lighting system in combination with the legacy fog system;
- Creation of a fake lighting system;
- As a result of the efforts, it was possible to increase the average frame rate to 30 fps.
Summary
The concerted efforts of the development team allowed the game to be significantly stabilized, which was reflected in user reviews. This video game was liked by 87% of users.
